G3: Joe
Satriani, Steve Vai & Yngwie Malmsteen
|
 |
The 2003
incarnation of Joe Satriani’s popular G3 tour will kick off on
October 9th at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, AZ and
continue across the US, ending in late November (more dates TBA).
Having achieved tremendous success and critical praise in their
own careers, this tour will mark the first time the three
influential guitarists have joined forces on the same stage.
Continuing with the same successful formula as in years past, fans
will be treated to individual sets by each guitarist with their
own bands before joining Satriani and his band on stage for an
all-star jam session. |
“It’s always great
to get out and play with Steve and adding Yngwie to this year’s
tour will definitely kick our jam sessions up a notch or two! I’m
looking forward to hitting the road!” exclaimed Satriani.
In the April 2003 issue of Guitar World
Magazine, recordings from all three of these guitar gods were
highlighted in the magazine’s “100 Essential Guitar Albums” special
poll. Malmsteen’s Rising Force (1984) clocked in at # 3 just behind
Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix, while Satriani’s double-platinum Surfing
With The Alien (1987) came in at # 4 and Vai’s critically acclaimed
Passion And Warfare (1990) came in at # 6.
This fall, Epic will
release the critically acclaimed The Satch Tapes on DVD. First
released in January 1992 on VHS, this marks the first time it will be
available on DVD. Satriani is currently writing and recording material
for a new album, due out in Spring 2004. Vai’s next project will be a
2-hour live DVD shot at the famed Astoria Theatre in London, also set
for release this fall. Included in the DVD will be live performances of
20 songs plus bonus features. This fall will also find Malmsteen
domestically releasing Attack!!, his 22nd solo album.
Originally available in Europe and Asia only, Attack!! has garnered
much critical acclaim overseas.
The lineup for the
first-ever G3 tour in 1996 featured Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric
Johnson. A DVD with performance highlights from that tour was
subsequently released and has since been certified platinum. In 1997,
Satriani and Vai again reunited adding Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Robert
Fripp to the bill. In May 1998 the tour headed over to Europe where
Satriani was joined by Uli Jon Roth and former Scorpions guitarist
Michael Schenker. The 2001 G3 tour featured the team of Satriani and
Vai again, this time adding John Petrucci of Dream Theater.
As with previous G3
tours, special guest guitarists will be invited to join the jam at
select dates around the country. Past guests have included Neal Schon,
Gary Hoey, George Lynch, Billy Gibbons and Brian May.
