Where do you go from here? Jonny Lang
is music. It's as though the center of music has burrowed
itself somewhere inside of him and exists only to be beckoned out
through his thick and captivating vocals. Oh yeah, and he also
plays the guitar better than most anyone around.
Although he is only twenty-two years
old (How is this possible?) Jonny sings of love and loss with an
undeniable conviction. Every word he sings is validated through
his pure passion and belief. With a voice that should be housing
the soul of an old blues player, Jonny unleashed his power in a
way that silenced and erased any warm up act that may have knocked
on the door of the theater prior to Jonny's arrival.
Here's the biggest difference; Not
only is Jonny Lang immensely talented and captivating, but he is
also humble and gentle and outwardly grateful of every audience
reciprocation he receives. For someone of his talent, musical
caliber and sheer youth, you would expect an overly confident
musician showboating his God given abilities with a sense of
arrogance. This definitely is not the case. Not only is Jonny
secure of his talent in an unassuming way, but he is also more
than willing to share the spotlight. Each fellow musician on stage
was given the opportunity to showcase their skills with extensive
solos.
Jonny and crew poured through a ninety
minute set list that ended in an extensive duel between Jonny and
his horn player. In a freestyle manner, one would play with such
impressive ability only to be followed and matched by the other.
This continued, back and forth, until the crowd was on their feet.
Next came the encore in which Jonny
performed Red Light, the single off his new record Long
Time Coming. An inspirational song that makes you feel as
though you can conquer the world, it was one of the evening's
highlights. Then came Breakin' Me. A passionate song of
love and loss that Jonny first sang at the age of about eighteen,
he brought the night home with his strong yet calm presence.
Seeing Jonny Lang perform is truly a
gift. It feels as though you're witnessing a supernatural
phenomenon. Then there's the personality that enhances it. With
his shy yet confident presence, Jonny will not leave you
disappointed. This is a musician who truly delivers.
