If you're going to a Maktub show,
then you'd better be in good spirits or at least prepared to be taken
there. The energy of the crowd and the attitude the band emotes is pure
elation. You know it's going to be a party.
Front man Reggie Watts commands the
stage with the chic persona of many a funk legend before him. This is
not in any way to imply that Watts is legendary. But he does have a hand
in the pot that will unveil possible status as he progresses and works
throughout his untold career. If his status in Seattle is any
indication, his chances are good.
The rest of the band follows suit
with Davis Martin
keeping rhythm on drums and Kevin Goldman providing the heartbeat of
every song on bass. Then there's the hypnotic guitar playing of Thaddeus
Turner matched with the melodic keys of Daniel Spils' piano skills. It's
clear that this band is familiar with one another and confident of the
musical journey they're ready to take.
It's not easy to form a loyal
following in a city with such proven talent as Kurt Cobain and Eddie
Vedder. But Maktub have done it. Continually selling out crowds and
playing esteemed venues such as The Showbox, this is a band that has
only just begun to show who they are. If their live set is any
indication, there are no barriers as to how far they will go.
