Pete Yorn is an artist who has earned
the respect of critics and a devoted following through his
introspective, personal style of songwriting. Unfortunately, few
of the following he has built were here tonight.
Pete is currently in the midst of
touring with Foo Fighters, the successful offspring band of
Nirvana's Dave Grohl. Maybe this begins to explain why the
majority of the crowd were there solely for the purpose of seeing
Foo Fighters, (the show was in Seattle after all and it had been
three years since the band last played here). Still, this crowd
had no idea what they were missing with their pre-occupation of
the evening's headlining act.
Pete Yorn is a gifted songwriter and
musician with one of the most important prospects any legitimate
artist can ask for: longevity. Pete and his band owned the stage
during their forty-five minute set. Opening songs included Closet
and Carlos (Don't Let It Go To Your Head), a song with such a
great guitar hook that it stays in your head for days. Listening
to Pete Yorn live is just like listening to his CD in terms of
quality and the sound of his voice. This is the sign of a true
artist. There are several performers in today's age of music who
are completely studio 'musicians'. Pete Yorn is definitely not one
of them. This man is an artist.
Performing many songs off the new
album including Come Back Home, Crystal Village and Burrito,
Pete's presence filled the room. Whatever that quality is that
creates a rock star, he has it. His dark hair covered his face the
majority of the set and his brief meanderings between songs made
it difficult to believe that this is a man who gets butterflies in
his stomach before he goes onstage. Still, there were occasional
moments when Pete would look to his band mates and beam with a
smile on his face, brief glimpses into the excitement that still
exists within him at the idea of performing. It was endearing to
see that he has not lost that.
Other songs performed included For
Nancy ('Cos It Already Is), Life On A Chain, Murray and
Black off
his debut CD musicforthemorningafter. Pete left the stage
without an encore but that's alright. There will be plenty of
other times to catch him live because it's nearly certain that
this is an artist who will be around for a very long time.
