Carlos Santana has long been considered a legend in the music
industry. At the 1999 Grammy Awards, his legendary status was
confirmed when the record Supernatural garnered several
wins. With over 8,000 people gathered at the
Tacoma Dome to see Santana in action, he demonstrated why he is
still a strong presence in music today.
The band walked onto the stage and began jamming with Carlos
Santana appearing a few minutes later to help the band launch
into Jingo. The band was full of energy and the
crowd was up out of their seats dancing. With a festive
atmosphere, Santana kept the crowd on their feet with songs like
We Got Latin Soul and Victory Is Won.
A key ingredient of Santana's re-invigorated commercial success
are the collaborations with many of today's biggest artists. When Rob Thomas loaned his songwriting capabilities and
sexy vocals to the song Smooth, the result was one of the
biggest radio hits in recent memory. Other artists who have
lent their voices to Santana's recent work include Dave
Matthews, Lauren Hill and Everlast. While the original
artists are not available to Santana each night, the songs are
not absent from the set list. Tony Lindsay and Andy Vargas have
taken the reigns and on
this night, they brought the crowd through hits like The Game
of Love, Put Your Lights On and of course, Smooth.
With a large screen displayed behind the band and a beautiful
array of lighting effects, Santana jammed for about two hours.
Some song selections lasted several minutes as the band
improvised and free styled. It's very possible that each song
sounds different from night to night depending on the mood and
environment of the evening.
The encore included a medley of Ah Sweet Dancer (with
special guest Michael Shrieve) and Novus (with special
guest Jerry Miller). The crowd danced and moved until the very
end. There were fans in the audience who have probably been
listening to Santana since the 70's and young fans who may have
discovered Santana within the past couple of years. With
diversity and musicianship like this, Carlos Santana proved
himself a strong force to still be reckoned with as he led his
band through another great performance.
