The Samples

The Knitting Factory
Los Angeles, CA
February 7, 2004

The cool thing about a Samples show is that they have a slide show while you wait, complete with quirky and enlightening facts, fun photos and more.  Very indicative of the kind of band The Samples is.  They finally came out at about 11:45PM and the packed house greeted them warmly as they began to play their popular song Feel Us Shaking.  Projected behind them were serene images of dolphins, becoming even more apropos when the lyrics “…out to where the dolphins play…” were sung.

Watching The Samples play felt like watching a show in your own home.  They had a warm and comfortable presence that was enhanced by the fact that they were playing in an intimate venue.  How could you not be happy watching them play?  Lead vocalist and guitar player, Sean Kelly, had a pleasant, relaxed demeanor that was inviting while the bass player, Jared, in his overalls and stocking feet, had a constant smile and looked like he was having a great time.  Likewise, Tom, the guitar player, had great energy, as well as being shoeless.  Something about people having their shoes off makes you feel at home with them!  It was Sean’s birthday as well so at one point the crowd burst into Happy Birthday.  He then said that his dream has always been to have it like the scene from Office Space where the deadbeats sing Happy Birthday.  He then proceeded to demonstrate.

Throughout the show there were projections of scenes of nature, old home videos and more to add to the whole visual experience, which also gave more insight into the band.  Also adding to the experience was the fact that they involved the crowd.  Sean threw out promos of their new CD Black and White and later on passed out copies of the lyrics to Lollipop, one of their new songs, so that the crowd could sing along.  They happily obliged.  Toward the end of the show, one of the crew came out and took pictures of those in the front row which they post on their website.  Sean also had a video camera he used to capture the audience.  It was a lot of fun and made you feel like you were a part of it and a part of them.

One of the highlights for me was when Tom switched to the keyboards and performed a solo cover of Elton John’s Your Song.  It was a beautiful rendition and with the images being projected directly behind him it made for a really special experience.  Another highlight was Sean’s solo acoustic performance of Seany Boy.

There was a good mix of old and new songs and you could tell the fans appreciated both.

The Samples are huge proponents of music sharing and actually encourage fans to copy their CD’s for friends.  Obviously it has worked.  Because of their connection with their fans they have managed to keep their music alive and continue to share their gift with all of us.
